Hardware ISA

ISA stands for "intelligent speed adaption" and is a very efficient tool for helping drivers keep the speed limits. The system is composed by a GPS, a computer and a display. The GPS is used to determine the vehicles current speed and compare it to the speed limit via a road database. Usually a display is used to show the speed limit of the road, current speed and sometimes how much faster you can drive before a warning is given. If the speed limit is exceeded the driver can be warned by:
  • The display showing the current speed in flashing red text.
  • A sound signal
  • The gas pedal giving a counter pressure or vibrating.
These alternatives can also be combined for a more efficient warning system.

ISA is a well-tried support system. In 1999-2002 the Swedish national road administration performed a study with ten thousand voluntary drivers. These were both private and professional drivers. The study revealed that:
  • The drivers experienced that they became better drivers with the help of ISA.
  • Traffic safety improved greatly.
  • Due to less stops and reduced need to use the breaks travel time remained the same even though the maximum speeds were reduced.
  • Speed maintained by the drivers became more even which led to reduced fuel consumption and reduced harmful emissions.

V-ISA

V-ISA can be used without an external warning unit. Instead statistics are shown in the booking system after the booking has taken place. This allows the admin to review how the speed limits are being obeyed by different users. This can be part of a program to promote safe and environment friendly driving. V-ISA has often proved to be as good as active ISA for generally improving the users driving habits.

V-ISA can also be used to associate certain coordinates with a location. We call this function "Visiting spots". If you are within certain coordinates it will count as if you're at the specified visiting spot. The booking system can later display information about which visiting spots were visited and for how long.
